In the face of escalating climate challenges, collaborative efforts are essential to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. The Geo-Cluster initiative, a dynamic alliance of EU-funded projects, exemplifies this by uniting expertise in geothermal energy to drive innovation and decarbonization. Launched in 2025, the Geo-Cluster brings together projects like GEOSYN, GeoS-TECHIS, and GEOFLEXheat, along with others, to share knowledge, resources, and breakthroughs. This collaboration not only enhances individual project outcomes but also amplifies their collective influence on Europe’s energy landscape, paving the way for a geothermal-powered future.
The Geo-Cluster Initiative
The Geo-Cluster is a collaborative ecosystem established to foster synergies among EU-funded projects focused on geothermal heating, cooling, and thermal energy storage. Led by the GEOSYN project, it was formalized in early 2025 to promote knowledge exchange, joint dissemination, and the scaling of innovations in geothermal technologies for industrial applications. By mid-2025, the cluster had grown to include 11 projects, each contributing unique expertise to address common challenges in renewable energy adoption. The initiative’s foundation lies in strategic partnerships supported by Horizon Europe funding, bringing together projects that address a broad spectrum of geothermal-related challenges from exploration and resource assessment to sustainable heating, cooling, and integration with industrial, urban, and district energy systems.

The partner projects, as highlighted on the Geo-Cluster LinkedIn page, encompass a broad spectrum of geothermal advancements. These include:
GEOSYN (Geothermal Synergy): Focuses on revolutionizing industrial energy efficiency through geothermal heating and cooling, combining steam heat pumps and heat-driven refrigeration.
GeoS-TECHIS (Geothermal Source Thermal Energy for Cooling and Heating in Industries with Steam): Integrates medium-temperature geothermal sources with high-temperature heat pumps and heat-driven cooling for industrial processes.

HOCLOOP (A circular by design environmentally friendly geothermal energy solution based on a horizontal closed loop): Offers closed-loop geothermal solutions for environmental sustainability.
This diverse group was identified through searches on EU platforms like CORDIS and coordinated outreach, resulting in signed Collaboration Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding to formalize partnerships.

Collaborative Efforts and Knowledge Sharing
At the heart of the Geo-Cluster is a commitment to sharing knowledge and resources, which accelerates progress beyond what individual projects could achieve alone. Collaboration is facilitated through monthly online meetings, a dedicated mailing list, and a cloud-based shared folder managed by partners like APRE, containing dissemination materials, event calendars, and publication topics. Each project assigns contact persons, often from communication teams, to ensure seamless coordination.
Key activities include joint workshops and webinars. The cluster plans at least three Mobilization and Mutual Learning (MML) workshops annually, joint webinars, and co-authored publications, targeting at least two per year, to advance geothermal research. Social media campaigns on the Geo-Cluster LinkedIn page, created by GeoS-TECHIS and shared among partners, amplify outreach with coordinated content calendars. Participation in industry events, such as the European Geothermal Congress (EGC) 2025, showcases collective innovations and boosts visibility.
A highlight of these efforts was the recent 1st Joint MML Workshop held online on October 21, 2025, titled “Sustainable Heating & Cooling Solutions for Industries and District Heating.” Organized by the GEOSYN project in collaboration with GeoS-TECHIS, GEOFLEXHEAT, FlexGeo, TREASURE, HOCLOOP, USES4HEAT, INTERSTORES, URGENT, CoolLIFE, and RE-WITCH, this three-hour event at 10:00 CET brought together experts to foster knowledge sharing and cross-project collaboration. The workshop featured expert presentations, each limited to 10 minutes, divided into two thematic sessions.
The first session, “Geothermal Innovations and Advanced Thermal Energy Storage for Industrial Decarbonization“, included talks such as Lorenzo Talluri’s on geothermal solutions for sustainable heating and cooling from the University of Florence for GEOSYN project, Anxo Pardiñas’s general presentation of the GeoS-TECHIS project from ITG Technology Center, and Michael Bayer’s development of a reduced-order dynamic model for large-scale seasonal thermal energy storage from HSLU Lucerne for the Interstores project. Other highlights were Andrea Frazzica’s insights on heat-to-cold industrial solutions from CNR on behalf of the RE-WITCH project, Simon Müller’s implementation of an expanding thermal source network from THI Ingolstadt for the Interstores project, Geotherma’s Ola Vestavik’s closed-loop deep geothermal solutions from HOCLOOP, and Euroheat & Powers Connie Ocando’s talk on decarbonizing heat through seasonal storage from USES4HEAT.
The second session, “Methodologies, Prototypes, and Policy Outlook of Clean Heat Solutions“, covered topics like Vaishak Somasundaram’s preliminary dynamic modeling of GEOSYN’s high-temperature heat pump from the University of Southern Denmark, Krzysztof Banasiak’s GeoS-TECHIS prototype for industrial heating and cooling from SINTEF Energy Research, URGENTS’ Virginie Harcouët-Menou’s geothermal exploration solutions for urban contexts from VITO, Eloy Álvarez and Daniel Alias’s LCA and SLCA methodology for decarbonization from LEITAT for GeoS-TECHIS, and GEOFLEXheat’s Martina Battocchio’s market and policy outlook on clean heat solutions from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA).

The event concluded with Q&A sessions and closing remarks, emphasizing the role of geothermal energy, thermal storage, and advanced heat pumps in supporting EU climate goals and accelerating clean heat deployment across Europe.
Shared Resources and Innovations
The Geo-Cluster fosters collaboration across all 11 projects by enabling the exchange of knowledge, public results, and best practices. Rather than sharing proprietary technologies, partners work together through regular coordination meetings, common communication tools, and a shared space for non-confidential documents. This helps projects stay aligned, avoid duplication, and identify natural synergies.
Innovation is exchanged at a thematic level. By discussing approaches to exploration, system design, heating and cooling solutions, and storage concepts, partners gain insights that support more coherent development across Europe’s geothermal research landscape. As demonstrations progress, the cluster provides a platform for comparing experiences and highlighting practices that can accelerate learning and amplify impact, while ensuring each project maintains full control over its own technical developments and IPR.

Collective Impact on Industrial and Urban Decarbonization
The Geo-Cluster’s united front significantly amplifies its impact on decarbonization. By integrating geothermal with thermal storage and waste heat recovery, the projects could reduce industrial CO2 emissions by up to 75% in targeted sectors, aligning with EU goals to meet 25% of heating and cooling demands via renewables by 2030. In industry, solutions like those in GeoS-TECHIS and GEOFLEXheat replace fossil fuels in processes requiring high temperatures, potentially saving 20-50% in energy costs.
For urban areas, projects like INTERSTORES and USES4HEAT enable district-scale storage, integrating renewables into heating networks and reducing urban emissions by 40-70% through efficient geothermal systems. The cluster’s policy briefs and joint studies influence regulations, promoting scalability and addressing barriers like public skepticism. Overall, this collaboration fosters energy security, job creation, and a low-carbon economy across Europe.
Toward a United Geothermal Future
The Geo-Cluster is more than a partnership; it’s a catalyst for systemic change in energy consumption. By uniting projects, it demonstrates that collaborative innovation is key to achieving the EU’s climate neutrality by 2050.
As Europe advances toward sustainability, the Geo-Cluster illuminates the path, proving geothermal energy’s role in a resilient future.
