Work Package 3: Thermal Energy Storage Development

Objective

Work Package 3 focuses on developing advanced underground and thermal energy storage ((U)TES) systems tailored to specific industrial needs. This includes modeling and optimizing the storage system to maximize energy efficiency and savings. The work package also explores innovative bio-based heat transfer fluids designed to enhance heat transfer and support diverse temperature ranges.

This research aims to create adaptable, efficient, and sustainable energy storage solutions to support industrial decarbonization goals.

This will be achieved through the following activities

T3.1 Designing high-temperature (U)TES systems in industrial capacities , M1 – M24, Leader: University of Ljubljana, Participants: LEITAT

  • Develop and evaluate designs for high-temperature TES systems optimized for industrial applications

T3.2 Advancement of Heat Transfer Fluids for TES, M1 – M24, Leader: LEITAT, Participants: University of Ljubljana, ITG

  • Research and create environmentally friendly heat transfer fluids with improved thermal performance.
  • LEITAT ensures HTFs are optimized for thermal efficiency, environmental compatibility, and operational safety.

T3.3 Customizing TES design with enhanced working media for pilot-site requirements, M1 – M24, Leader: University of Ljubljana, Participants: ITG, LEITAT

  • Tailor TES designs to meet the specific requirements of pilot sites, ensuring optimal energy performance.

Deliverables:

  • D3.1 Designing high-temperature TES systems in industrial capacities (M18, University of Ljubljana): A report outlining design methodologies and optimized TES configurations.
  • D3.2 Advancement of Heat Transfer Fluids within the system (M20, LEITAT): A report detailing the development of innovative and sustainable HTFs.
  • D3.3 Customizing TES design (M24, University of Ljubljana): A report presenting tailored TES solutions for industrial decarbonization.
