Work Package 4: Digitalization and Decarbonization

Objective

Work Package 4 focuses on advancing industrial decarbonization through innovative resource management and digital solutions. By integrating renewable sources like geothermal energy and utilizing excess heat and electrified thermal processes, the work package aims to optimize energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Additionally, WP4 will develop an open-access tool to evaluate decarbonization potential and alternative thermal processes, enabling industries to create effective decarbonization roadmaps.

This initiative supports smarter, more sustainable industrial energy management.

Work Package 4

This will be achieved through the following activities

T4.1 Pilot Site Process Analysis, M1 – M34, Leader: KAUMAN, Participants: ITG, SINTEF

  • Assess energy flows and thermal system requirements at the pilot site.
  • Upgrade data acquisition systems for improved monitoring and optimization of energy processes.

T4.2 Hybrid Digital-Twin Modeling, M1 – M34, Leader: ITG, Participants: SINTEF, University of Ljubljana

  • Develop and validate digital twin models to simulate energy assets, renewable sources, and storage systems.
  • Use these models to optimize resource management and support decarbonization strategies.

T4.3 Integrated Decarbonization Management Platform (DeCO2), M1 – M34, Leader: ITG.,Participants: KAUMAN

  • Create a modular platform for data analysis, forecasting, and thermal asset management.
  • Provide plant managers with real-time dashboards, trend analysis, and smart scheduling tools.

T4.4 Decarbonization Potential Evaluation Tool, M1 – M34, Leader: ITG, Participants: KAUMAN, University of Stuttgart

  • Design an open-access tool for industries to assess decarbonization strategies and energy efficiency opportunities.
  • Offer customized roadmaps based on energy flow analyses and techno-economic evaluations.

Deliverables:

  • D4.1 Pilot Site Requirements for Thermal System (M3, ITG): Report summarizing energy flow analysis and data acquisition system upgrades.
