Work Package 6: Sustainability, Stakeholder Engagement, and AI Integration
Objective
Work Package 6 aims to evaluate the environmental and societal impacts of GeoS-TECHIS technologies and ensure alignment with sustainability principles. This includes conducting life cycle assessments, engaging stakeholders through surveys and educational initiatives, and exploring the role of artificial intelligence in advancing geothermal energy. The work package also focuses on testing geothermal solutions for industrial decarbonization and providing policy recommendations through a comprehensive Whitebook. Robust mitigation strategies will be developed to minimize potential negative effects, adhering to the “Do No Significant Harm” principle.
This work package ensures the project’s innovations contribute positively to environmental and societal goals.

This will be achieved through the following activities
T6.1: Integrative LCA with Societal Indicators, M1 – M36, Leader: LEITAT, Participant: Fraunhofer IAO
- Conduct a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental footprint of GeoS-TECHIS technologies.
- Integrate societal indicators to assess the broader social impacts.
T6.2 Mitigation policies, M1 – M36, Leader: LEITAT, Participant: Fraunhofer IAO
- Develop strategies to minimize environmental and societal impacts in line with the “Do No Significant Harm” principle.
- Provide improvement measures for materials, processes, and end-of-life considerations to enhance sustainability.
T6.3 Public perception and stakeholder engagement, M1 – M36, Leader: Fraunhofer IAO, Participant: LEITAT
- Gather insights through surveys and interviews on public and stakeholder perceptions of geothermal energy.
- Develop educational materials to raise awareness and foster collaboration between industry and policymakers.
T6.4 AI-Driven Geothermal Exploration and Assessment, M1 – M35, Leader: Aitown; Participants: LEITAT, Fraunhofer IAO
- Explore advanced AI methodologies to improve geothermal resource identification and sustainable decision-making for industrial energy use.
T6.5 Realising the Potential of Geothermal Solutions for Industrial Decarbonization, M1 – M36, Leader: Fraunhofer IAO, Participants: LEITAT, ITG
- Consolidate project knowledge to create a roadmap outlining opportunities for integrating geothermal solutions in industries
- Provide guidelines for adoption, public awareness, and policy recommendations.
